Glory Days

Hoog in het noorden, in het extreme klimaat rond de poolcirkel, ligt het Kola schiereiland. De vele mijnen, havens en productieve staalindustrie maakten het gebied ooit de trots van de Sovjetunie. Inmiddels is het verval ingezet en beginnen de vervuilende gevolgen van ontginning zichtbaar te worden. Toch barst de lokale bevolking nog altijd van trots voor hun land en haar geschiedenis.

Na Snelweg NL keert filmmaker Ben van Lieshout met Hoogtijdagen in topvorm terug op AFFR. Met wonderschoon camerawerk weet hij het uitgestrekte landschap vol betonnen en stalen constructies treffend vast te leggen. Toch zit de kracht van de film in de prachtige portretten van de bewoners van dit gebied. Van jong tot oud, iedereen klampt zich vast aan hun eigen dromen over deze bijzondere plek.

The Kola Peninsula is located far north, in the harsh environment of the polar circle. The many mines, ports and productive steel industry once made the area the pride of the Soviet Union. Now in decline, it is starting to reveal the polluting effects of earlier development. Even so, the local population is still immensely proud of its country and history. After Snelweg NL, filmmaker Ben van Lieshout returns to AFFR in top form with Glory Days. With stunning camera work he succeeds in capturing the sprawling landscape of concrete and steel structures. Yet the power of the film lies in the wonderful portraits of local people. Everybody, young and old alike, clings to their dreams of this remarkable place.
