Zamenhof, geestesvader van Esperanto. Hun hersenspinsels weerspiegelen het Brasilia tijdens de space age, waar de honger naar de toekomst wringt met het mystieke verleden. Brasilia, an architectonic failure or the pinnacle of modernism? Oscar Niemeyer, Lucio Costa and Joaquim Cardozo designed “the city for the future” in 1956. Their utopia ended up as an uninhabited artificial world. A Machine to Live In examines the history of this radical modernism and juxtaposes it with texts by the Brazilian writer Clarice Lispector and the architecture of L. L. Zamenhof, creator of Esperanto. Their concoctions reflect the Brasilia of the space age, a time when a yearning for the future caused friction with a mystical past. Filmmakers Yoni Goldstein and Meredith Zielke take us on a visual adventure that centres on the search for the ideal city.
