In Woody Allen’s fiftieth film, the New York filmmaker once again shares his characteristic reflections on life, death, literature, and love, this time set in Paris and in French.

Fanny (Lou de Laâge) and Jean (Melvil Poupaud) appear to be the ideal couple. Successful in their careers, residing in a beautiful apartment in an upscale neighborhood of Paris, they seem just as in love as in the early days of their relationship. However, when Fanny coincidentally encounters Alain, a high school classmate, she falls in love instantly. Alain and Fanny soon reconnect, unaware that Jean has hired a private detective to shadow his wife.

Filmed in Paris, Coup de chance -Woody Allen’s first non-English language film- explores the significant role that chance and luck play in our lives. The film premiered at the Venice Film Festival, where protests took place outside the theater against Allen’s presence, given past accusations of sexual abuse by his adoptive daughter. Inside the cinema, applause was heard. While Coup de chance may not reach the level of Allen’s previous masterpieces like Annie Hall or Blue Jasmine, the film has become a highly entertaining French love thriller.
