Frey II: The Architectural Interpreter

Woestijnstad Palm Springs is onlosmakelijk verbonden met het mid century modernism van de VS. De belangrijkste reden hiervoor is het aantal spectaculaire projecten dat de Zwitserse architect Albert Frey hier in de jaren vijftig en zestig heeft gerealiseerd.

Filmmaker Jake Gorst maakt met Frey II: The Architectural Interpreter het tweede deel van zijn uitgebreide portret van deze bijzondere ontwerper en leerling van Le Corbusier. Het eerste deel, Frey: The Architectural Envoy, was in 2018 op AFFR te zien. Met archiefbeelden, foto’s en interviews schetsen ze het beeld van een man die als een kluizenaar leefde boven de stad die zoveel aan hem te danken had.

Palm Springs, a desert city inextricably linked to mid-century modernism in the US. That is mostly down to the number of spectacular projects built by the Swiss architect Albert Frey here in the 1950s and 1960s. Frey II: The Architectural Interpreter is the second instalment in filmmaker Jake Gorst’s extensive portrait of this remarkable designer and student of Le Corbusier. Part one, Frey: The Architectural Envoy, was screened at AFFR in 2018. Featuring archival images, photographs and interviews, the film paints a portrait of a man who lived as a hermit above the city that had so much to thank him for.
