In de wijk Cedar-Riverside in Minneapolis werd rond 1970 de aanleg van een hoogbouwwijk halverwege stopgezet na verzet van bewoners. Zijde monstreerden, maar hielden ook een huurstaking en voerden – en wonnen –rechtszaken vanwege ‘de ecologische en sociale nadelen van hoogbouw’. De ontwikkelaars probeerden het tij nog te keren met vredestekens op hun artist’s impressions, maar uiteindelijk schreven de bewoners van Riverside zelf, collectief, een vernieuwingsplan voor het deel van de wijk dat nog niet was gesloopt. Een aanstekelijk optimistische film over wat een tegencultuur vermag. Met een verrassende prelude over de bewoners van de flats. ‘The people united will never be defeated!’
Around 1970, opposition from residents halted the construction ofhigh-rise development in the Cedar-Riverside neighbourhood of Minneapolis atthe midway point. They demonstrated, refused to pay rent and took lawsuits –which they won – because of the ‘ecological and social disadvantages ofhigh-rise development’. The developers tried to turn the tide with peace signson their artist’s impressions, but in the end the residents of Riversidethemselves drew up, collectively, a renewal plan for the part of theneighbourhood that had not yet been demolished. A contagiously optimistic filmabout what a counterculture can achieve. With a surprising prelude about theresidents of the flats. ‘The people united will never be defeated!’
