Het Smelt - Expat Cinema Rotterdam

Miss seeing international films because you can’t yet keep up with the Dutch subtitles? Want to meet fellow expats and new Dutch folks? Love cinema? Then this is the event for you! Join Expat Cinema Rotterdam for the best international art house cinema with English subtitles.

Twenty-something Eva, who leads a secluded life as a photographer’s assistant, is preparing to return to her native village. After having seen a call on Facebook for the memorial of a childhood friend, she decides, with a block of ice in the back of the car, to deal with traumatic events from a summer thirteen years ago. As a thirteen-year-old, Eva and her two best friends Tim and Laurens became involved in manipulative games with other children. The film slowly unravels the past and shows how oppressive the isolation can be of children who are not seen by their environment.

The novel Het Melt sold no fewer than 250,000 copies in the Netherlands. The film adaptation is reminiscent of one of our favorites from last year: Close by Lukas Dhont.
