Nana (Before, Now & Then)

Kamila Andini

In the 1960s, Indonesian communists tried to carry out a coup, but the army violently suppressed their attempt. In the subsequent purges, countless people were killed as well.

Nana, a young woman, barely manages to escape, but her husband and son are never heard from again. Many years later, she has remarried the wealthy landowner Darga and is living a seemingly carefree life. In her nightmares she is however haunted by the past. Something changes when she befriends Ina – an unlikely friendship, as Ina is her husband’s mistress.

In Nana, director Kamila Andini, whose movie The Seen and Unseen was screened at World Cinema Amsterdam in 2019, tells a story about the power of friendship between women. She does this in an intoxicating visual style, letting the images linger with viewers for a long time. Based on the novel Jais Darga Namaku by Ahda Imran.
