Short Animation Selection 2023

Een selectie van hedendaagse artistieke en experimentele korte animatiefilms, geregisseerd door zowel getalenteerde nieuwkomers als ervaren veteranen. De geselecteerde films variëren sterk in stijl en inhoud, en bieden de kijker de kans om te ontdekken wat de toekomst van de Japanse animatie in petto heeft.

A selection of contemporary artistic and experimental short animation films directed by both exciting newcomers and experienced veterans. The selected films differ greatly in style and substance, and offer you a chance to discover what the future of Japanese anime has in store.

        One day after school, Ryota repeatedly committed certain acts.
      • Leapfrog うまとび HANDA Tomomi 4:25
        The director’s memories from the sight and the noise of the gym when P.E.class started, and they had to find partners to do stretching exercises or leapfrog together.
      • The SALE 今日はきょろきょろバーゲンセール MORIMOTO Maki 7:20
        A girl goes to town to buy a big chicken.
      • NOMINO SUKUNE 野見宿禰 MIYAJIMA Ryotaro 1:45
        In ancient legend, SUKUNE Nomino was the creator of the Japanese sumo wrestling. He also aborted the live human sacrifices in the tombs of the emperor and made terra-cotta clay sculptures instead.
      • The Expanding World 広がる、せかい KURIYA Tae 10:00
        A shy young girl becomes involved with others through drawing. She’ss extremely afraid of other people and does not want to show her drawings to others. One day, a classmate says to her, “A picture that is not appreciated is meaningless,” and she becomes reluctant to draw. However, through various encounters she has had since then, she has come to face her painting again.
      • Carrots Don’t Wait ニンジンは待ってくれない MACHIDA Lina 7:37
        That stray dog that the girl loved so much wanted an apple for a long time. Meanwhile, the carrots try to turn everything into a seedbed. The girl opens the box and leaves with the dog because they know that decay is inevitable. 
      • The Ogre, the Curtain and Salt 鬼、布と塩 NISHIHARA Misa 11:00
        Once upon a time, the ogres and the villagers decided to live in separate mountains a short distance apart. But as time passes, that promise has been forgotten by everyone. The curtain tied to the tree vaguely shields them from each other, while the salt vaguely tries to connect them. The samurai rush to the villagers’ fear, but everyone is unable to understand what is so terrible.
      • In The Big Yard Inside The Teeny-Weeny Pocket ミニミニポッケの大きな庭 YUKI Yokl 6:37
        When it shrinks, it expands. It floats and it sinks. It separates but connects. When I think I’m watching them, they’re actually watching me. A rhyme that weaves together the many days of observing, recording, and experimenting.
      • MOLTING Bowda Katsushi 13:42
        In a space symbolizing a garbage dump site left by the human race, that had formerly ceased to exist, uniquely evolving AI were endlessly sorting out a mountain of garbage. A being that had been once the god of the earth came by there, took up the traces of civilization, and wandered around while molting repeatedly. Then, it moved to the center of the space. It was the process of absorbing the negative accumulation left by people.
      • Polka-dot Boy ポルカドットボーイ NIHEI Sarina 7:40 Ever since he can remember, a boy is suffering from a polka-dot disease on his arms. Encountering some peculiar events, he discovers a hidden connection between the disease and a religious group.
      • MANGA Girls マンガガールズ KEDOIN Yuki & OKADO Takashi 9:55 This is a story of when I liked to draw manga alone. I would always draw manga by myself at school, but then someone started to follow me. “Am I being stalked?!” To run away from them, I hid in a random car trunk. “Okay, they can’t find me here.” But as soon as I thought of that, the trunk closed, and I got locked in. My phone was dead too. What do I do?!
