Corruption and forced labour are inextricably linked to the construction of stadiums in the desert of Qatar for the FIFA World Cup in 2022. Thousands of workers from Africa and Asia live in labour camps around the construction sites. Lonely and without a passport, and unable to return home, they work long hours in high temperatures on the structures. To conceal the malpractice, the builders came up with a clever marketing ploy when they staged The Workers Cup, the best opportunity to break through as a future football star.
