Modern Ruin: A World's Fair Pavilion
Het New York State Pavilion was ooit het stralende symbool van de New York World’s Fair in 1964/1965, nu is het een spookachtige herinnering van de optimistische jaren zestig. De film verhaalt over dit ontwerp van Philip Johnson, van de gloriedagen van de wereldexpo tot de langzame ondergang die zo’n vijftig jaar duurden – en duren. In 2009 is een groep van bezoekers de zaken in eigen hand gaan nemen. Eerlijk gezegd heeft dat de boel niet echt opgeknapt, maar het heeft wel gezorgd voor een hernieuwde aandacht voor het gebouw en hergebruik van oude cultuurmonumenten in het algemeen.

The film reports on this design by Philip Johnson, from the glory days of the fair itself to its steady decline over the past fifty years. After the fair the pavilion had some success as a concert hall and roller rink, but today it stands neglected and abandoned.
In 2009 a group of visitors took matters into their own hands. It’s only fair to say that that hasn’t actually improved the state of the building, though it has ensured renewed attention for the building and the use of old cultural monuments in general.
