Keiko is a young woman with a hearing impairment and only one dream: to become a professional boxer. Despite the significant challenge, she spends every free minute in the ring, where she holds her own thanks to her dedicated coach. However, when her trusted boxing club faces closure due to the pandemic and her coach’s declining health, Keiko is overcome with fear. Her greatest obstacle turns out to be not her next fight but understanding herself and her driving force.

“Small, Slow but Steady” is an intimate portrait of a determined young woman searching for her willpower to box. Director Shô Miyake loosely based his film on the autobiography of Keiko Ogasawara, the first professional Japanese female boxer with a hearing impairment. His beautifully shot character study on 16mm film was named the best Japanese film of 2022 by Kinema Junpo and won CinemAsia’s Jury Award in 2023.
