De stad Chandigarh belichaamt de nieuwe democratie van India na de onafhankelijkheid van 1947. De Frans-Zwitserse architect en stedenbouwkundige Le Corbusier mocht deze moderne en humane stad ontwerpen – een stad die het culturele leven bevorderde, waar mens en natuur harmonieus samenvielen. 70 jaar later onderzoekt The Power of Utopia wat er is overgebleven van de eerste optimistische verwachtingen. Bewoners, kunstenaars en architecten toetsen de kwaliteit van de stad aan de oorspronkelijke ideeën. Het huidige, overbevolkte en schijnbaar chaotische India lijkt in weinig meer op het India van net na de onafhankelijkheid. Maar de oude plannen bieden onverwachte kansen voor de nieuwe bewoners.
The city of Chandigarh embodied the new democracy of India after it gained independence in 1947. The French-Swiss architect and urban designer Le Corbusier designed this modern and humane city – one that promoted cultural life, where humankind and nature coexisted harmoniously. Seventy years later, The Power of Utopia examines what remains of the initial optimistic expectations. Residents, artists and architects assess the quality of the city according to the original ideas. The current, overpopulated and seemingly chaotic country appears to have little in common with the newly independent India. But the old plans offer unexpected opportunities for the new inhabitants.
