Meet the Maker: Paula Strunden (Alison's Room: An Extended Reality Archive)
De installatie Alison’s Room verkent de mogelijkheden van virtual reality voor archief- en ontwerponderzoek.
Paula Strunden heeft de oorspronkelijke werkkamer van de Britse architect en auteur Alison Smithson nagebouwd om te experimenteren met nieuwe verhaallijnen, die een immersieve ervaring combineren met historische ontwerpanalyses. In deze prestatie licht Strunden de totstandkoming van de installatie – het onderzoek en het ontwerp van de installatie – toe. De VR-ervaring maakt geen deel uit van deze presentatie, daarvoor kunt u separaat voor een van de timeslots een ticket boeken. De installatie wordt vertoond in samenwerking met het Nieuwe Intituut/Jaap Bakema Study Centre.
Paula Strunden
Paula Strunden is een transdisciplinaire kunstenaar met een achtergrond in architectuur. Ze studeerde in Wenen, Parijs en Londen en werkte bij Raumlabor Berlin en Herzog & de Meuron Basel. Sinds 2020 voert ze haar PhD uit als onderdeel van het Europese onderzoeksnetwerk TACK, onder leiding van Angelika Schnell aan de Academie voor Schone Kunsten in Wenen. Als onderdeel van haar functie bij Store Projects en oprichter van het internetplatform XR Atlas pleit ze voor een interdisciplinaire geschiedschrijving van virtuele technologieën en geeft ze les in ‘extended reality’ aan summerschools, in workshops en cursussen.

Alison’s Room is een project van Paula Strunden, gerealiseerd in het kader van het door de EU gesponsorde project TACK: Communities of Tacit Knowledge in Architecture, in samenwerking met Dirk van den Heuvel en het Jaap Bakema Study Centre.

The installation Alison’s Room explores the possibilities of virtual and mixed reality technologies in relation to archival studies and design research.
To this end Paula Strunden recreated the original work room of British architect and author Alison Smithson to experiment with new narratives combining immersive experience with history-based design knowledge. With this presentation, Strunden explains the realization of the installation – the research and the design of the installation. The VR experience is not part of this presentation; you can book a separate time slot for a ticket.
The installation is presented in collaboration with the New Institute/Jaap Bakema Study Centre.
Alison’s Room: An Extended Reality Archive – Paula Strunden
The installation Alison’s Room explores the possibilities of virtual and mixed reality technologies in relation to archival studies and design research. To this end Paula Strunden recreated the original work room of British architect and author Alison Smithson to experiment with new narratives combining immersive experience with history-based design knowledge.
Alison Smithson (1928-1993) was one of the early protagonists of the New Brutalism together with her husband Peter (1923-2003). They were founding members of Team 10, and Alison herself authored various seminal publications on Team10. The Smithson papers of Team 10 are kept in the collection of the Nieuwe Instituut.
The Smithsons worked from their combined house and office Cato Lodge, in South Kensington, London, where Alison enjoyed a work room of her own, separate from the office and everyday home life. Here, she kept the office and publication archive, including photos and slides, project dossiers, correspondence, and various manuscripts.
About Paula Strunden
Paula Strunden is a transdisciplinary artist with a background in architecture. She studied in Vienna, Paris and London and worked at Raumlabor Berlin and Herzog & de Meuron Basel. Since 2020, she has been conducting her practice-based PhD as part of the European research network TACK under the direction of Angelika Schnell at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna. As part of her associate position at Store Projects and founder of the internet platform XR Atlas she advocates an interdisciplinary historiography of virtual technologies and teaches extended reality summerschools, workshops and courses internationally.
